What is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with specialized training in psychiatry and mental health. PMHNPs are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health conditions. After completing graduate education and clinical training, PMHNPs obtain national board certification. We work independently and in collaboration with other health professionals to provide comprehensive mental health care, which includes diagnosing disorders, prescribing medications, and offering psychotherapy and patient education.
How are you different than other psychiatric providers?
As nurse practitioners, we focus on the health and well-being of the whole person. We view you as an individual, not just a diagnosis. We believe that all aspects of your life—your experiences, relationships, and physical health—affect your mental health. Treatment planning, therefore, needs to address more than just medications. Together, we will develop a care plan that works for you.
Can you prescribe medication? Are there limitations to your practice?
Yes, as a licensed Nurse Practitioner in New Mexico, I am fully authorized to prescribe medications. New Mexico allows Nurse Practitioners to practice independently, which means I can provide comprehensive care without the need for physician oversight.
